I would recommend the following Guy albums - The Dark, Old Friends, and Boats To Build. But if you need to economise his live album - "Keepers" is a great introduction.
On another list another American pal has just been saying that Guy is virtually unknown in the USA, but he tours extensively and I don't think he's played to an empty seat in the past twenty years.
He is, IMHO, one of your greater national treasures.
Andy

Subject: Re: [Acoustic Guitarist Guild] Guy Clark - the guitar
Thanks for turning us on to Guy Clark, Andrew! The guy is most definately a "songcrafter."
I liked him so much that I'm ordering a few of his early CD's and the DVD "Live from Austin, Texas."
I've spent a goodly amount of time in Tejas and must admit, it's like a foreign country in its own right. Can't wait to go back.
Too bad the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin is but only a wonderful memory. Saw and met The Flying Burrito Bros. and Willie Nelson there about 25 years ago.
Don't know how I could have missed out on Guy Clark, considering the timespan he covers.
The song "The Guitar" was indeed eerie. I hope to emulate the playing of Guy and his side-kick Verlon Thompson - what a trip!
Anyway, Andrew, the suspense is killing me, tell us the story of the guitar that took you over!
Cheers, & all the best,
Mick
P.S. My 44 year old Gibson C-1-D has overtaken me before, but now more than ever, having mellowed and considerably louder than ever before.
Ta!

Hi, some of you guys will know that although I'm a Limey, my passion is for
American music and of all the wonderful stuff that the USA has given us
(musically at least) - the singer-songwriters of Texas are about my all time
favourites.
And...of all those .... Guy Clark is my main man. We thought we'd lose
him a year or two back but despite heavy smoking, drinking and hard touring
- he fought that devil off and keeps on keeping on.
He is IMHO - one of the finest song craftsmen ever.
Now you guys all play guitar - and so I'll ask you a question - have you
ever picked up a guitar that "played you" ?
I have, and it is almost as chilling as the story in this new song of Guys:

By the way - Guy is playing a 000 12 fret that he built himself (sorry - in
Texan - hisself).
Something more from Guy about song writing and guitars that might amuse you
